[Materials]
Core: selected black-tip purple rabbit hair

[Recommended Use]
Suitable for writing characters around 0.5–2 cm.
Ideal for sutra copying, small regular script, Lingfei Jing, styles such as Wen Zhengming and Zhao Mengfu small script, small semi-cursive, small cursive, and other fine, delicate lines that ordinary brushes cannot easily achieve.
[Notes]
Purple rabbit hair is hard and not highly abrasion-resistant. It is recommended to use it with relatively smooth papers such as semi-sized waxed paper and with light-glue ink.
It is best to avoid cooked xuan paper, rough-edged calligraphy paper, ordinary daily practice paper, and red-grid tracing paper.
Care and Usage Instructions
[Opening the Brush]
When first using the brush, gently loosen the bristles and rinse off the protective glue under a small stream of running water.
Do not soak the brush for long periods, as this may cause the bamboo handle to crack.
[Cleaning After Use]
After writing, rinse the brush gently under a small stream of water.
Lightly press and release the tip several times until the ink color becomes very faint.
After washing, reshape the tip, absorb excess water, and lay it flat to dry in the shade.
Before the next use, moisten the brush with water first, blot it with tissue until it is about 70–80% dry, and then dip it into ink.
Paper Recommendations
Purple rabbit hair offers:
- excellent tip gathering
- strong elasticity
- a sharp writing point
- outstanding detail expression
However, it is also:
- relatively brittle
- easy to snap
- not resistant to abrasion
Therefore, it is best used on smoother papers, such as:
- waxed paper
- anti-bleed paper
- micro-coated paper
Please avoid using it on:
- ordinary white xuan paper
- raw xuan paper
- cooked xuan paper
- rough bamboo-pulp practice paper
- tracing paper
Ink Recommendations
Small-script brushes are very demanding when it comes to ink.
Ordinary bottled ink made for medium or large characters usually contains too much glue and is not suitable for fine small-script writing.
It is best to use ground ink stick ink or light-glue plant-based liquid ink.
[Warning About Heavy-Glue Ink]
Heavy-glue ink can be very harmful to small-script brushes.
When the ink is too thick and glue-heavy, it may cause false split ends in the bristles, make the tip stick together, and prevent smooth writing.
This may lead to a dry, rough brush feel or off-center tip behavior, causing major inconvenience during writing.
For small-character writing, switching to ink stick ink or light-glue ink can greatly improve the writing experience.
[Tips for Using Purple Rabbit Hair Brushes]
Purple rabbit hair is firm and springy, so sometimes a few hairs may stick out from the tip.
This is a natural characteristic of the hair material, not a manufacturing defect.
You may pull out those hairs directly if needed.
Doing so can even improve the writing feel.
About Black-Tip Purple Rabbit Hair
Black-tip purple rabbit hair is one of the most precious materials used in traditional Chinese brushes.
It is said that the finest brush tips are made from the hair on the upper back of wild mountain rabbits. High-quality purple rabbit hair usually comes from adult wild male rabbits, and only a very small portion of the black, highly elastic back hair can be selected. This makes it extremely rare and difficult to obtain.
It is called “black-tip purple rabbit hair” because of its dark purplish-black color.
It is harder than weasel hair and has exceptionally strong resilience.
Bai Juyi once praised the purple rabbit hair brush in his verse:
“The tip of the purple-hair brush is like an awl, as sharp as a knife.”
This line vividly captures the sharpness and excellence of the material.
Because only very specific wild rabbit back hair can be used, brush makers often need years of collecting before enough material can be gathered to produce a batch of brushes. Fine purple rabbit hair brushes are therefore rare and highly valuable.
Although many people know that “purple rabbit hair” means rabbit hair, fewer realize that rabbit hair itself has many grades.
This is why brushes all labeled as purple rabbit hair may range from only a few yuan to dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of yuan in price.
Grades include black-tip purple rabbit hair, pearl-tip, white-tip, three-flower, four-flower, and up to eight-flower, with tip sharpness and toughness decreasing grade by grade.
Purple rabbit hair is known for:
- excellent tip gathering
- strong elasticity
- sharp point
- good ink retention
But it is also:
- brittle
- easy to break
- not wear-resistant
For this reason, it is often regarded as a brush better suited for finished work rather than rough daily practice, and it should be kept away from overly coarse paper whenever possible.
